ABOUT WILD SHUTTER ADVENTURES & JOE SUBOLEFSKY
Joe Subolefsky is a Maryland-based wildlife and nature photographer with over 50 years of experience in the outdoors. A lifelong naturalist and conservationist, Joe has spent nearly every day in the field, developing a deep connection with wild places and the animals that inhabit them.
In 2020, Joe joined Chas Glatzer’s prestigious Shoot The Light as a photography instructor and workshop leader. Today, he leads his own photography adventures through WildShutterAdventures.com, where he offers immersive, hands-on workshops for photographers of all skill levels.
Joe’s award-winning images have appeared on the covers of Ducks Unlimited and Natural History Magazine, and he has placed and won in many national and international competitions including Bird Photographer of the Year and the Audubon Photography Awards. His photography has been featured by Audubon, Ducks Unlimited, and Cornell University, including in Cornell’s Bird Biology textbooks and other outlets.
What sets Joe apart is not just his technical skill, but his finely tuned understanding of animal behavior—honed through decades spent photographing wildlife in its natural environment. This deep behavioral insight allows him to anticipate moments before they happen, and more importantly, to teach his clients what to look for while photographing wildlife. It’s a skill that simply can’t be learned on YouTube—and one that makes the difference between a good shot and a truly great one.
Joe is known for his extraordinary patience, both with wildlife and with people. His greatest satisfaction comes from helping others succeed. His workshops are designed to be fully hands-on, allowing clients to shoot in real time, ask questions, and adjust their approach in the field with direct feedback and support.
He shoots with Canon gear but is fluent across a range of camera systems. Joe also meticulously scouts every location before bringing clients there—considering light, backgrounds, animal patterns, and timing—to ensure the best photographic opportunities possible.
Whether you’re a beginner eager to learn or a seasoned photographer looking to elevate your skills, Joe’s field expertise, teaching style, and commitment to client success make him one of the most trusted leaders in wildlife photography today.
