Each winter, Bosque becomes home to tens of thousands of Snow Geese and Sandhill Cranes, creating a truly breathtaking spectacle. The refuge’s official bird checklist identifies 48 commonly seen winter species, including raptors and a diverse range of waterfowl, offering a wealth of subjects to photograph. The famous “blast-offs” of Snow Geese at sunrise—when thousands take flight simultaneously—are a must-see event, combining visual drama with a wall of sound that’s unforgettable. Evening sessions showcase elegant silhouettes of cranes gliding into roost against the vivid colors of the New Mexico sky.
Dynamic flight action, takeoffs, landings, and flock behavior provide excellent opportunities to refine your bird-in-flight and action photography techniques. Joe will offer hands-on instruction during morning and afternoon sessions, focusing on camera settings, composition, tracking, light management, and the art of anticipating behavior for the perfect shot.
Set against the striking backdrop of the high desert landscape and distant mountain ranges, Bosque offers not just a technical learning experience, but also an artistic one—perfect for building both your portfolio and your field expertise.
