Get ready for an unforgettable 4-day photography adventure in Northern Minnesota—home to the planet’s richest concentration of wildlife! This action-packed expedition is your chance to photograph the Great Gray Owl, the iconic bird of the northern bogs and boreal forest, nearly twice the size of other owls. Photographing a Great Gray is a bucket-list item for many, and seeing one for the first time is an emotional experience.
Other species we will likely cross paths with include Northern Saw-whet Owl, Long-eared Owl, Northern Hawk Owl, Black-backed Woodpecker, Canada Jay, Boreal Chickadee, White-winged Crossbill, Pine Marten, Fisher, Bobcat, Moose and more in the snow.
This workshop blends fun, education, and adventure in one epic journey. Perfect for photographers of all levels, this is your chance to experience and capture beauty in this snow covered winter wonderland.
Dates: January 25th – 29th, 2026 Meet Joe at 3:00pm in Minneapolis on January 25th. The adventure will conclude after the morning shoot on the 29th after which we will head back to Minneapolis,St Paul.
Why Travel with Us: The team at Wild Shutter Adventures prides themselves on providing customized, small group, in field photography and camera instruction. Joe has scouted the locations and researched the weather and sun to provide photographers with the highest possibility of capturing the shots they desire.
Cost: $2,200
Deposit: A $750 non-refundable deposit is required. The balance is due 60 days before the date of the workshop and is then non-refundable. Deposits can be made via checks payable to Joe Subolefsky or PayPal/Credit Card (+3%).

Join Joe Subolefsky for an immersive four-day photography adventure in northern Minnesota —including the “Bog”one of North America’s premier bird photography destinations. Designed for photographers of all levels, this small-group workshop offers personalized instruction and in-field guidance with a maximum of just three participants, ensuring ample one-on-one support to elevate your skills.
Our main target will be the Great Gray owls with the possibility of encountering bonus species such as Norther hawk owl, Barred owl, Boreal owl, Saw-Whet owl and Snowy owls.
Understanding key factors such as sun, wind, species behavior, and terrain is crucial for achieving stunning imagery. With personalized instruction on camera and lens settings, you’ll gain hands-on experience to master the art of capturing not just striking portraits but dynamic in-flight shots. Limited to just three participants, the workshop ensures ample one-on-one time to address individual questions and challenges in the field.
Included: Photographic instruction; three morning and four afternoon shoots (location to be determined by the weather and migration reports)
